Emily Nix - Empowerment through combining abilities

A young film student from Irvine, Emily Nix, has been an activist for years and has previously done work within her role as a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament for Cunninghame South.

Emily is a 20-year-old young woman who enjoys working with a variety of women on issues that face them.

Through the Scottish Youth Parliament, she got to meet many inspiring women who made her feel empowered.

She has worked on many different projects with women on mental health and eating disorders, culture, and media as well as filmmaking.

This ties into the work that she has done previously within the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) as a Convener of the Culture and Media Committee, where she led the way in the remit and planned activities and campaigns to push for change.

SYP is a youth-led organisation that is democratically elected, ages ranging from 12 up to 25, and the membership is made up of young people from across Scotland from different backgrounds and communities.

Through her university course, she was able to make a movie called “Not Like Other Girls” to showcase the misogyny behind the phrase ‘not like other girls’. She wanted to shine a light on how stigmatising the phrase can be even if people don’t realise it is. She aimed that the movie would start an open conversation about topics of this kind.

When asked who she finds most empowering, Emily said;

Through what makes Emily unique that makes her empowering, she spoke about her range of interests and the way that she applies them. Through her activism and filmmaking as well as music, she can bring them all together to gain unique experiences and perspectives on the world around her.

Regarding what she thinks makes other women empowering in her eyes, she spoke about the confidence that women can stand up for themselves and what they believe in. Emily spoke about the idea of women setting boundaries and how empowering that can be.

Women being authentically themselves and doing what they love and enjoy with no shame in doing so.

Emily mentioned how on Tiktok, a well-known social media platform for people to post videos, there is a community of people who make fun of women for what they do, how they act, and what they wear. So, to see women ignoring that and doing what they want to do and enjoying it is empowering to her.

Finally, when asked about what she thinks can make others feel and be empowered, she stated,
